Scripture: Psalm 133
How very good and pleasant it is
When kindred live together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head,
Running down upon the beard,
On the beard of Aaron,
Running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon,
Which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord ordained his blessing,
Life forevermore.
Devotion:
My husband, Alex, and I have always agreed that all couples should go on a date to get wings early on in their relationship. A wing date lets you know what you’re really getting into: you can’t be on your best behavior when you are trying to tear into wings smothered in buffalo sauce. You have to be yourself. And for us, there is a lot of joy that comes from wing sauce dripping down our faces as we enjoy the taste and smell and experience of indulging in delicious food together.
When I read about this precious oil dripping down the head, running down the beard of Aaron, I think about Alex’s beard covered in wing sauce and the unfettered joy of eating wings together. When you’re eating messily and saturated in the experience, you don’t have time to be self-conscious or to worry about the mess; you can only concentrate on being filled with joy. In this Psalm, the main character’s robes are getting ruined by oil and his beard is getting greasy, and yet what matters is the unbridled joy of God’s blessing. Like a small child eating a popsicle, like Augustus Gloop gulping from the chocolate river in Willy Wonka. I wonder if you’ve had the chance to experience unbridled joy with God this week. Have you taken some time to relax in God’s good creation, to enjoy the sunshine and the nice weather, to take joy in the buds on the trees and the chirping of the birds? Have you experienced the joy of the risen Christ this week?
